Holiday Home Insurance

In the last decade or so the number of people who have invested in property abroad has soared. Whole regions of Spain have become populated by British tourists with second homes, and the pattern has been repeated around the world, the British love to travel and as a relatively affluent country, many people can afford to splash out on second homes.

Of course, even if you can’t, letting your own house for a holiday is a great experience. If you’re looking for a holiday where you can come and go as you please, and if you don’t mind not having the service that a hotel break offers, letting a home is a great way to have a base in a foreign country.

One problem that many people come up against when they’re letting a home or spending time in their second home is the cost of insurance. Travel insurance can be surprisingly expensive, particularly if you’re choosing to spend a significant time out of the country.

If you own your own second home, you may not need to worry about travel insurance, but you should make sure that you have insurance of some kind. As someone who is not a registered citizen of another country you will need health insurance, travel insurance, or at the very least an E111 card, this will ensure that in European countries you will have access to medical care should something happen.

Due to the increase in popularity of people with second homes there are specialist insurers out there who help with buildings or contents insurance for people in other countries. These are well worth looking at, whilst you may have to pay a little more, if you’re not confident in the language of your adopted country, it can be a good idea.

If you’ve rented a holiday home then travel insurance is a must. Some insurance polices will cover you indefinitely, but if you’ve rented a place for a long time, consider a long-term insurance policy, or even an annual one if you think that you’re going to travel a lot. Most insurance companies offer a range of policies, so it’s just a case of finding the right one.

A quick final tip for getting cheap travel insurance is to look at internet insurance specialists like GO Travel Insurance. Getting insurance from a company who operate principally on the internet can save you money because there are less admin fees associated to the company. If you do your research and look around a bit you’ll be able to find really good deals.
